Have you noticed someone whose values and beliefs have shifted dramatically? Could it be a case of brainwashing? Steven Hassan has developed a 4-step reality testing method after 45 years of research, beginning when he left a cult that deceived him into joining. The key takeaway is that brainwashing isn’t confined to cults—we’re all vulnerable to it. This talk will make you reconsider how easily we can be influenced.

Steven Hassan, PhD, is a mental health professional specializing in undue influence tactics used by authoritarian leaders and harmful groups. His expertise spans destructive religious and political cults, human trafficking, extremist groups, parental alienation, one-on-one manipulation, professional abuse, and corporate programs. He has authored four books, including Combating Cult Mind Control, Freedom of Mind, and The Cult of Trump, and his works have been translated into 10 languages.

His online course, Understanding Cults: The Basics, lays the foundation for recognizing cult behaviors. As the Founding Director of the Freedom of Mind Resource Center, Dr. Hassan offers consulting, training, and support for individuals leaving cults and for concerned families and organizations. He is also the founder of Freedom From Undue Influence, a non-profit focused on conducting research to improve legal and social policies related to undue influence.

Dr. Hassan developed the BITE Model of Authoritarian Control to pinpoint manipulative tactics and the Influence Continuum Model to distinguish ethical from unethical influence. His Strategic Interactive Approach (SIA) offers a legal and effective intervention for families of cult members. Dr. Hassan emphasizes that access to truth, freedom of thought, and freedom from undue influence are fundamental human rights. Protecting these rights requires a scientific, law-based approach.

Dr. Hassan is affiliated with the Program in Psychiatry and the Law at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital. He has been an educator in various roles, including at Harvard Law School and the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program. After escaping the Moon cult in 1976, he dedicated over four decades to helping people recover from undue influence. His extensive experience makes him a sought-after speaker and media commentator.

Dr. Hassan holds a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Cambridge College and a Doctorate in Organizational Development and Change from Fielding Graduate University.
