Consciousness has long been thought of as the domain of humans and a few select animals. But what if our methods for testing it have been flawed all along? That’s the bold claim in a recent video from A Curious Birb, which presents the groundbreaking work of Professor Masanori Kohda. Over 30 years of studying fish behavior led Kohda to a surprising conclusion: cleaner wrasse not only passed the famous mirror test, but did so in a way that challenges the very foundation of how we assess self-awareness in animals.

Why the Mirror Test Might Be Missing the Point

For decades, the mirror test has been considered a gold standard for measuring self-awareness in animals. If an animal sees a mark on its body in a mirror and then touches that mark, it’s assumed to recognize itself. Great apes, dolphins, and elephants have passed. But the test has a major flaw. Kohda shows that the results depend heavily on the color of the mark.

When he used red marks—resembling the color of parasites that wrasse commonly remove—the fish passed. But with green or blue marks, they failed. This suggests the test is more about color relevance than true self-awareness. If the fish didn’t recognize the mark as something meaningful, would it even matter? And if that’s the case, how many species have we missed because we were looking for the wrong signals?

Animal Consciousness Research and the Future of Science

Kohda’s team developed a new kind of photo recognition test. When fish saw a photo of themselves with a mark, they would attempt to rub it off. No other non-human species had ever done this before. This shows that fish not only recognized themselves in a mirror, but also in a still image—an ability previously only seen in humans.

What’s most fascinating is how fast they learned. In just 20 minutes, fish were reacting to their own reflections, a speed almost on par with human children. This challenges the assumption that self-awareness must take time to develop and implies that many animals may be more conscious than we realize—especially when we study them on their own terms.

As Kohda says: “If one day we want to understand other minds, then we may first have to learn how to stop looking only for ourselves.”
