Mitragyna speciosa (commonly known as kratom) is a tropical evergreen tree in the coffee family native to Southeast Asia. M. speciosa is indigenous to Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea, where it has been used in traditional medicines since at least the nineteenth century. Kratom has opioid properties and some stimulant-like effects.
Many opium/heroin addicts have attributed kratom to helping them wean off of their opiate addictions. Many of these addictions started with doctor prescriptions for ligament pain treatment.
Kratom is illegal in many countries now including many U.S. States. Most understand it's illegal, not because it is harmful, but because it chips away at the profits of the opium and pharmaceutical trade.
