Unblinking and unsettling, this documentary lays bare a mysterious process that goes on all around us: What happens to people who die with no next of kin? WARNING! This video contains images that may be disturbing to those sensitive to images of a graphic nature.

The independent documentary feature was produced and directed by Blue Hadaegh and Grover Babcock. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and has been broadcast internationally. Updated distribution plans for 2013 are pending.

The film follows the events that happen following three people’s deaths in LA county. None of them have next of kins and are in the hand of the government. Dead bodies in various stages of decomposition are seen, but not played for shock factor. Instead, you learn a little about each person, both what they were before death and what will happen to them afterward. They are followed from the discovery of the body to the final disposition of the remains, and each step in between.

To be honest, I hesitated sharing this video because it does have a cold, uncompassionate feel to it, but I imagine those who see this kind of stuff each day get a bit desensitized. It is informative and educational however, regarding a subject we are all destined to face, which is why I decided to share.
